Charles Robert's story

Charles Robert Dadswell

Charles Robert (Bob) Dadswell, was born at Stawell on 27 July 1926, the first child of Thomas William and Violet lIma Evangeline (Burford) Dadswell. He attended Stawell Primary School No. 502 and Stawell Technical School.

Like his father, he was interested in music from an early age. He started a life-long association with brass bands with Stawell State School Band, followed by Stawell Brass Band, and after commencing work with Williams the Shoeman in Warracknabeal at the age of 17, with the local band there. He was also a noted boxer with the Youth Club, enjoyed running and tennis.

He served the shoe company at various places throughout Victoria and met Nola Forester while he was relieving manager at the Mildura branch where Nola had worked for eight years. They were married at St Margaret's Church of England, Mildura, on 3 July 1950.

They worked at Bairnsdale branch for a short time but obtained a transfer to Stawell because of the illness of Bob's father, Tom Dadswell. Some months later, Bob became manager of the branch at Casterton, where he also joined Rotary, serving a term as secretary.

Bob played table tennis, and both he and Nola played tennis. Their daughter, Janine Dadswell, was born at Casterton. In early 1958, Bob left the shoe shop and started work with T & G Insurance. They moved to Portland with that company later that year and their son, Neil Dadswell, was born there.

Two years later, Bob changed companies and became resident inspector for the Hartford Monarch Insurance Group. He stayed with them for 12 years, and when the company decided to reduce numbers, Bob and Nola took on the business as self-employed agents. The business was successful and eventually was sold. As Bob did not want to retire altogether, they took on a carpet cleaning franchise in July 1986.

Bob enjoyed the change from office work and was still in this business when, at the age of 63, he collapsed and died while playing tennis on 10 February 1990.

Over the years, he was recognised by many organisations for his service. In 1980, the Victorian Table Tennis Association presented him with a long service certificate, and in 1985 the Victorian Band League gave him a merit badge for his years with brass bands (55 years at the time of his death). He also had a badge marking 25 years of being a blood donor.

Both he and Nola were life members of Portland Lawn Tennis Club, and each year Bob would travel to the Veterans Tournament at Mildura. Both had musical backgrounds - Nola's father played violin and her mother the piano. Nola took piano lessons from an early age. Bob played in brass bands all over Victoria and while relieving at stores of Williams the Shoeman would make his way to the local band room.

Bob died in 1990, Nola in 2020.
