Norman Stanley's story

Norman Stanley (Norm) Dadswell, the third and youngest son of Stan and Ethel Dadswell, was born at Ararat on 20 May 1935.

He attended Warrak State School (school 834) from 1941 to 1946. By the time he commenced secondary school at Ararat, a bus service was operating between the two centres.

While at the Ararat High School, Norm was selected in 1950 to represent the Shire of Ararat on a tour of England organised by the Melbourne Sun News-Pictorial newspaper, a scheme known as the 'Sun Youth Tour.'

After completing his secondary education at Ararat, he attended the Gordon Institute of Technology in Geelong undertaking a course in wool classing. He then joined the wool broking firm of Strachan where he remained until 1966.

At that time he formed a partnership with a friend, Irving Ackroyd, and together they branched out into the wool classing and buying business. After the retirement of his partner, Norm continued to operate the business.

On 25 February 1961, he married at Geelong Thais Shaw, eldest daughter of Thomas Stewart and Elizabeth Evelyn (Smith) Shaw.

The couple set up house at 36 Maurice Street, Geelong, and had two children - John, born 1964 and Ann, born 1966.

Norm took a keen interest in golf, being for some years a member of Torquay Golf Club and later the Geelong Golf Club, where he served on the special events committee for 6 years. He was also a keen fisherman.

He died on 23 July 2005.
