Olive Jane Dadswell's story

Olive Jane Dadswell was the second child of Alfred Edward and Jane (Groom) Dadswell, born at 35 Easton Street, London on 13 February 1889. Her older brother did not survive infancy and her younger sister was born after the death of their father.

Olive and family lived with her maternal grandparents when she was young but in 1893 her widowed mother Jane Dadswell migrated to Australia with Olive and her younger sister Mabel. Their sailing ship, the Tara, arrived in Sydney on 13 August 1893. A stepsister, Sybil Dadswell, was born there in December that year.

By 1895 Olive and her family were living in Queensland, where her mother remarried that year. In 1899, according to a report in the Queenslander newspaper, Olive and her sister Mabel were bridesmaids at the Fitzroy Methodist Church wedding of family friends.

The following year, when Olive was aged 11, her mother - who was living at Mt Morgan - died.

In Queensland when she was aged about 19, Olive had the first of three known children in 1908 - Olive Myrtle Dadswell - followed by a second in 1910 - Percy Dadswell. No father was listed for either birth, and her son Percy was placed in an orphanage at an early age.

By 1924 Olive was back in Sydney where that year, when aged about 35, she married Arthur Frederick Mann, son of Henry J. and Annie Mann. Olive and Arthur Mann are known to have had one child, Mildred Marion Mann. Olive died suddenly at her home in Military Road, Mosman, in 1960 when she was aged 70. Her death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald indicates she stayed in touch with her sister Mabel in Brisbane and her step-brother Stuart Hassal in Rockhamptom, but there was no reference to her first two children. Arthur Mann died in 1980 aged 83.
