Percival Leslie's story
Percival Leslie (Perc) Dadswell, the second son of Stan and Ethel Dadswell, was born at Ararat on 29 December 1930.
He attended the Warrak State School for eight years where he obtained his Merit Certificate. He then worked for 9 months in Ararat as an apprentice motor mechanic before returning to Warrak in 1945 where he took up shearing and general farming pursuits on his father's farm and in the district.
Of his early life Perc could recall he and his brother Bill observing grandfather Otto and father Stan felling trees, and deciding to try for themselves. Taking two small tomahawks they went to a paddock and after about an hour's solid work they managed to fell one of Otto's prize trees, which he had been saving for future fencing posts. Otto's 'ear treatment' to the boys was applied with devastating effect.
In 1951, Perc left home for Melbourne, obtaining a position as a transport driver with Kraft Food Co., which involved trips to Kraft establishments in country Victoria, carrying products from those locations to Melbourne for processing.
In 1955 he left Kraft and joined the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria as a serviceman, where he remained until just prior to his father's death in 1957, when he returned to Warrak to follow the family tradition of farming.
He married at Ararat on 27 September 1952 Joan Patricia Clough, born at Ararat on 17 June 1932, the fourth daughter of Joseph Rudolph and Margaret Elsie (Harrigan) Clough of Buangor.
There were four children to the marriage: Christine, twins Graeme and Gregory, and Janine.
In 1972, Perce obtained a position with the Victorian Railways at the workshop and fuelling depot at Ararat, commuting daily from Warrak. He worked there until the Railways closed those operations in 1988. While working at the railways, and since then, he continued to work his farm at Warrak.
Meanwhile, in 1972, Joan undertook a course in nursing, training at the Ararat and Warracknabeal Hospitals and qualifying as a nursing aide in 1973. She obtained a position at the Ararat and District Hospital where she worked for many years.
On his return to Warrak, Perc became active in community affairs including the local Rural Fire Brigade, taking over the position of secretary from his father Stan, the school committee and the hall committee and he had been a trustee of Mt Cole Cemetery Trust since 1967, a position his grandfather Otto held for about 50 years.
In 1972, a plan was developed to provide a reticulated water supply to the district. Perc was actively involved in the negotiations for and the construction of the project, with the work of digging the trenches and the laying of the pipes being carried out by the local residents.
Perc's wife Joan died at Ararat on 17 December 2006. Perc died almost a year later, also at Ararat, on 23 November 2007.
