David Dyer Dadswell's story

David Dyer Dadswell was the second of two sons born to Charles Edward and Florence (Hayes) Dadswell. He was born at Albert Park on 18 February 1897.
Army declaration by David Dadswell
He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 1 June 1912 when he was aged 15 and spent a year aboard the boys training ship HMAS Tingira before being discharged as unsuitable. He joined the Australian Army on 4 January 1916 when aged 20.

He served in France and during battles he was wounded in the shoulder and suffered deafness. He faced at least two court martials for being absent without leave. While on leave in England in 1917, he married (at Marylebone, London), Edith Ruth Stubley, who was born at Hull, England, in 1895.

Following his return to Australia, he married Phyllis Mary Smith, daughter of Alfred Smith, a leather merchant, and Mary (Hale) Smith, at St Kilda on 23 January 1922, declaring himself a bachelor. At this time, he described himself as a farmer although his usual address was given as 274 Barkly Street, St Kilda.

In 1931 the couple was listed living at nearby 8 Alfriston Street, Elwood. At the time of his death on 12 July 1951, David Dadswell was listed as a builder living at 533 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. His death certificate stated there were no children from the marriage to Phyllis Smith.

As neither he nor his brother appeared to have had children, the Dadswell name died out for this branch of the family.

This 11-generation Family Chart shows the development of this Dadswell family (PDF file).
