Edward Dadswell's story
Edward Dadswell was the fourth child and second son of Thomas and Mary (Taylor) Dadswell. He was baptised on 9 June 1754 and was to be one of several Dadswells to enter the clock-making profession.
He may have completed his clock-making apprenticeship working for his elder brother Thomas Dadswell at East Grinstead but it seems more likely this was done working for his father’s cousin John Dadswell at Burwash.
On 2 November 1777, he married Ann Carter, living first at Rotherfield and then Burwash before moving to Eastbourne where in about 1783 Edward set up his own clock-making business.
The couple had eight children but the death of Edward in 1802 brought an end to the Dadswell family’s association with clock making.
Edward and Ann are ancestors of Dadswells who migrated to Australia and established themselves in Melbourne.
