Edward Dadswell's story

Dadswell clock face

Edward Dadswell was the fourth child and second son of Thomas and Mary (Taylor) Dadswell. He was baptised on 9 June 1754 and was to be another Dadswell who entered the clock-making profession.

He may have completed his clock-making apprenticeship working for his elder brother Thomas Dadswell at East Grinstead but it seems more likely this was done working for his fatherís cousin John Dadswell at Burwash.

On 2 November 1777, he married Ann Carter, living first at Rotherfield and then Burwash before moving to Eastbourne where in about 1783 Edward set up his own clock-making business.

The couple had eight children but the death of Edward in 1802 brought an end to the Dadswell familyís association with clock making.
