Edward Okill Dadswell's story

Edward Okill Dadswell, a school master, was the eldest son of David and Ann (Oakill) Dadswell. He was baptised at Rotherfield, Sussex on 2 December 1750.

On 18 July 1786, Edward married Elizabeth Taylor at Rotherfield and the couple had 12 children who were all baptised at Rotherfield.

Edward became the school master of Crowborough Charity School about 1810 and continued in this role until about 1832, following in the footsteps of his grandfather William Oakill who reputedly was the first school master there.

He was about 82 when he died in 1832 and his will distributed a large estate. Several properties were left to his wife Elizabeth. He left property and legacies to all his sons and daughters except his sons William Okill and Thomas Ovenden - the latter received a legacy and a release from a debt owed to his father.

Elizabeth Dadswell was living with her son William Okill Dadswell when she died at Rotherfield on 9 February 1841, aged about 77. She left legacies to all her living children except William Okill who received his mother's properties.

Edward and Elizabeth are ancestors of Percy Dadswell of Toowoomba, Queensland.
