William Dadswell's story

William Dadswell, third son of Thomas and Sarah (Brown) Dadswell, was baptised at Rotherfield on 21 January 1781. He married Sophia Turner (born about 1790 at Tonbridge, Kent) at Maresfield, Sussex on 4 Feb 1809.

William and Sophia Dadswell lived at Kidders Ash and had nine children. All except the youngest three were baptised at Rotherfield.

William died in 1839 and was buried at Rotherfield on January 30 of that year. Sophia lived for a further 24 years - she is shown in the 1841 living with her children at Kidders Ash, in 1851 living with her daughter Charlotte (Field) at Firebrook, and in 1861 living in lodgings and describing herself as 'almswoman'. She died two years later aged about 73 and was buried at Rotherfield on 10 May 1863.

[Sophia Caroline Dadswell married John Illman at Rotherfield on 14 May 1831. They departed London with four children on 25 July 1839 aboard the sailing ship 'Cleveland', arriving at Port Adelaide 18 December 1839. Six more children were born in Australia].
