Alfred Edward Dadswell's story

Alfred Edward Dadswell was the fifth child and third son of David Taylor and Mary Ann (Wickenden) Dadswell. He was baptised on 8 November 1857 when the family was living in the Rotherfield area of Sussex.

The 1871 census shows him living at home with his family, and listed as a scholar.

Alfred Dadswell became a butcher and on 6 June 1886, when aged 27, he married Jane Groom, 23, daughter of John and Ann (Wright) Groom. The couple had three children - the first died in infancy and just before the third child was born Alfred died, aged 33. Jane Dadswell moved to live with her parents for the birth of the third child.

Jane had a twin sister Emily living in Sydney, and migration records show a Mrs Dadswell and two young children arriving at Sydney aboard the sailing ship Tara on 13 August 1893.

Four months later, on 18 December 1893, a daughter, Sybil Dadswell, was born in Sydney with Jane claiming on the birth certificate that the father was her husband Alfred Dadswell (Alfred had died in 1890).

Jane Dadswell and Frederick Stuart Hassal married in Queensland on 8 July 1895 - her daughter Sybil assumed the name of Hassal, and the couple had a son. She was a confectioner at Mt Morgan when she died on 18 September 1900 at the age of 33. Her death certificate claims the children of this marriage were Sybil and Henry Stuart Hassal.
